During his lifetime, Warhol painted commissioned portraits from Polaroids or photographs, but he was also well known for appropriating images of iconic faces from newspapers publicity stills, and other media. These source images were then turned into large-scale silkscreen prints on canvas. The artist was quoted as saying, “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.” His portraits reflect this belief, as they often serve to elevate their subjects into the model of superstardom with which Warhol was obsessed.
